The organizer represents the main considerations or cues practitioners use to organize a study. Strengths and weaknesses represent other attributes that should be considered when deciding whether to use the approach for a particular study. The following narrative highlights differences between approaches grouped together. Given the nature of the evaluand and the type of questions, how narrowly or widely does one cast the net?
How far down the causal chain does the evaluation try to capture the causal contribution of an intervention? Essentially, the narrower the focus of an evaluation, the greater the concentration of financial and human resources on a particular aspect and consequently the greater the likelihood of high-quality inference. Although it may seem obvious that evaluation design should be matched to the evaluation questions, in practice much evaluation design is still too often methods driven. The rise in randomized experiments for causal analysis is largely the result of a methods-driven movement.
Barriers and/or facilitators to implementation was the most widely reported term to describe the purpose and focus of the process evaluation (Table 4). The aim of our systematic review is to synthesize the existing evidence on process evaluation studies assessing KT interventions. The purpose of our review is to make explicit the current state of methodological guidance for process evaluation research with the aim of providing recommendations for evalution definition multiple end-user groups. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses present results by combining and analyzing data from different studies conducted on similar research topics.
